Professor Canaud considers the process of referral of renal disease patients to a nephrologist from primary care, and how this process can vary between countries. He also discusses the impact of ESAs in CKD, highlighting the improvements achieved in patient outcomes since their introduction. He stresses the importance of treating anaemia early on in CKD, and the extremely rapid and beneficial effect this has on patients’ lives.
