Serum Hepcidin – 25 May Replace the Ferritin Index in the Thomas Plot in Assessing Iron Status in Anemic Patients

Development of biochemical markers is a rapidly advancing area, current markers do not distinguish IDA from ACD and the combined state of ACD/IDA.

This study explores the extent to which serum hepcidin-25 enables the differentiation of the above states compared with the ferritin index plot.

The results suggest that this marker can differentiate IDA from ACD and ACD/IDA, but not ACD from ACD/IDA – the authors suggest that by combining with CHr (i.e., replacing the ferritin index in the Thomas plot) this differentiation can be made.
